The British Accreditation Council for Independent Further and Higher Education (BAC) is a fully independent body, established in 1984 'to improve and enhance the standards of independent further and higher education.' BAC's Council consists of representatives nominated by educational bodies responsible for the maintenance of educational standards in Britain.
BAC publishes a list of some 100 accredited colleges in four categories:
Independent Sixth Form and Tutorial Colleges
Business and Professional Education and Training
Higher Education
Special Needs Education
Accreditation is based on a thorough and regular system of inspection by specialists. The Chief Executive of BAC will assist in resolving any difficulties between colleges and their clients, and an Ombudsman is available should the Council feel that a complaint requires further investigation.
